(Seattle, WA) — Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) launched a new TV ad titled Rewrite History, which focuses on the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol — which Murray witnessed firsthand — and the continued threats MAGA Republicans pose to our democracy:
“I will not let anyone rewrite history,” Murray says in the ad. “On January 6th, I will never forget the pounding at the door. We barricaded ourselves in a small office in the Capitol. The MAGA mob did everything they could to stop the peaceful transfer of power.
“MAGA Republicans want to seize power in this year’s election. Our democracy is in real danger. It’s up to all of us to save it. I’m Patty Murray and I approve this message because democracy is on the ballot.”
According to a recent analysis by FiveThirtyEight, 49 percent of Republican nominees advancing to the 2022 general election fully deny the results of the 2020 election. As Trump’s “Big Lie” about the 2020 election takes hold — a whopping 70 percent of Republicans do not believe Joe Biden was the legitimate winner of the 2020 election — a recent NPR/Ipsos poll found that 64 percent of Americans believe U.S. democracy “is in crisis and at risk of failing.”
According to her campaign website, MAGA Republican Tiffany Smiley has “serious questions about the integrity of our elections,” and believes “that courts have an obligation to give all evidence of voter fraud a full and fair hearing.” Allegations of voter fraud have been repeatedly and systematically debunked, and voter fraud is proven to be exceptionally rare.
Senator Murray voted to impeach former President Trump for his role in inciting violence and attempting to prevent the certification of the 2020 election; she was also one of the first to call for former President Trump’s removal under the 25th Amendment after the January 6th insurrection. Murray previously recounted her escape from the violent mob in the U.S. Capitol on January 6th in a lengthy interview with PBS NewsHour.
