We wanted to take a moment to share with you some recent issues Senator Murray has
been working on for the People of Washington State. She celebrated
a major success recently, as the Wild Sky Wilderness bill was passed and
signed by the President. On two other issues, she continues to demand
answers and action from the current administration.
After six years of working in the Senate to pass the Wild Sky Wilderness bill,
the legislation was finally signed into law earlier this month. The
bill, which Senator Murray co-sponsored and first introduced into the
Senate in 2002, creates the first wilderness area in Washington State in
over 20 years. It designates 106,577 acres of national forest in
Snohomish County as wilderness, protecting the pristine nature of this
land and enhancing recreational opportunities for the region. The
success of this bill is a tribute to Senator Murray's dedication to
preserving the natural beauty of Washington state.

Senator Murray continues to fight on behalf of Washington state residents by pressing the current
administration for answers about the recent loss of the Boeing air
tanker contract. This week, she questioned Defense Secretary Robert
Gates about the Pentagon's decision to give a $35 billion contract
instead to the foreign-owned Airbus company. Secretary Gates was unable
to provide a satisfactory explanation as to why his agency made this
decision which could weaken the U.S. aerospace industry, and threaten
our national security. His vague responses to Senator Murray's
questions only raised more concerns for Congress, and for the American
people. Senator Murray will continue to hold the Pentagon accountable
for its decision on the Boeing tanker deal by demanding answers from
these top officials.

She also continues to fight for another issue close to her heart—providing our veterans with the
care and services they deserve. Last month, she called for the
resignation of the top Veterans Administration official after his
attempts to purposely downplay the increase in suicides among returning
veterans. This week, the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee - of which
Senator Murray is a senior member - held a hearing on her legislation to
provide better care for our female veterans in response to the dramatic
increase in women patients at VA clinics The legislation would mandate
that each VA hospital employ a case manager to handle women's issues,
and would also help provide childcare so that female patients can access
care more easily. She believes that the men and women who have served
honorably deserve only the best treatment, and she continues to work on
behalf of veterans across Washington state and across the
country.
